Botox® Cosmetic
What is Botox®, and how does it work?
What is Botox® Cosmetic , and how does it work?
Botox® Cosmetic is an easy, non-surgical, treatment option for those of us fighting the signs of aging. Botox® is designed to reduce the excessive muscle activity that causes fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Frown lines and facial wrinkles can be a thing of the past with Botox® Cosmetic.
Botox® cosmetic is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This protein relaxes the muscles so that the skin's appearance becomes smoother and more youthful looking within days.
What are the benefits of Botox?
Botox® Cosmetic is used for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines found between the brows. It is also used to help lessen the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead or around the eyes. Botox® will, over time, fade these symptoms giving you a smoother, rejuvenated appearance that can last for up to 4 months.
Botox® treatments have also been found to be successful in the treatment of other facial lines and wrinkles around the lower eyelids, as well as the nasal fold (found around the nose and mouth). Botox has also been used as a non-surgical brow-lift or when used in conjunction with surgical procedures including forehead lifts, facelifts, and eyelid surgery.
How often are Botox treatments needed?
Because Botox is a non-surgical treatment option, its wonderful benefits are not permanent but will last upwards of 4 months. Results are different for everyone but will leave you with a rejuvenated facial appearance. Extremely severe lines may never completely fade, but will gradually become less noticeable. Your doctor will work with you in designing a treatment schedule that will create optimal results.
If you decide to discontinue your Botox treatments, you will notice a reemergence of the lines and wrinkles you had lost.
What is a Botox treatment session like?
Before receiving a Botox injection your doctor will ask about any allergies or medical conditions that may make Botox a less than ideal treatment option for you. No anesthesia is needed; if you are sensitive to pain your doctor may recommend an anesthetic cream or cold pack to numb the area.
The treatment procedure is fast and easy. Your doctor will decide where to place each of the injections for your optimal results. The entire injection process only takes about 10 minutes. And what's more is there is little to no downtime, so you can go back to your regular activities without missing a step.
Who is a candidate for Botox injections?
Men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 are possible candidates for Botox injections. Studies have found that 90% of patients showed improvement in the severity of their frown lines and wrinkles. Only your doctor can decide if Botox is right for you.
Patients with certain medical conditions, those that are pregnant or may soon become pregnant, and those with recurring infections or on recurrent antibiotic use may not be candidates for Botox injections. Please consult with your doctor for more details.
Are Botox injections safe? What are, if any, side effects?
For many patients Botox is a perfectly safe treatment option. However, it is important to inform your doctor about any diseases affecting muscular control, any allergies, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and any medications you may be taking, as they may react adversely with the ingredients found in Botox.
The most common side effects are pain, infection, inflammation, swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at the injection site. For some patients, temporary eyelid droop and nausea may be experienced following a Botox injection. Patients with various neuromuscular disorders (ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome are examples) have a higher risk for serious side effects.
Dysport® Cosmetic
Introducing Dysport® to Washington, DC and Maryland
Long enjoyed in European spas
Dysport® has been FDA approved and released in the U.S. to join Botox® in the fight against wrinkles. Dysport® has actually been distributed for cosmetic uses abroad for several years. Dysport® got its start, not as a cosmetic skin care treatment, but as a medical remedy for muscle spasms and movement disorders. The drug's benefit for aging skin was discovered as a pleasant side effect, and the Dysport® movement took off from there.
Injectable Fillers
Juvederm®, Radiesse® & Restylane®
What is an injectable filler?
Injectable fillers, sometimes called "dermal fillers", are specially designed cosmetic treatments that are used to reduce and sometimes eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that make us look older. They help to reverse the signs of aging while providing a more youthful, refreshed, and healthier appearance.
Say goodbye to the lines, creases, and hollowed areas that many of us get as we age; and say hello to the fuller, healthier, look of youth. When searching for the perfect dermal filler it is important to understand that each is designed in a specific way to meet your specific needs.
Understanding Juvederm®
Juvederm® is a gel produced from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring element in skin that helps to produce volume and hydration. This gel is designed to refresh the look of skin and erase the signs of aging. This is the only FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler that has a proven track record for great results, found quickly and safely.
Juvederm® is administered through a fine injection directly into the mid to deep dermis to help fill in the unwanted lines and creases. Before receiving a Juvederm® injection it is important to discontinue the use of any medications that could prolong bleeding (including aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories). In general, the injection process takes approximately 15 minutes; and because this is a non-surgical treatment there is little to no downtime.
What happens following a Juvederm® injection?
After you have received your injection your doctor may recommend that you avoid excessive exercise, sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverage consumption for approximately one day. This is to diminish the risk of temporary swelling, redness, and/or itching at the injection site. For some patients injection-related reactions have been reported. These reactions include pain, redness, swelling, or bumps. These symptoms have been mild and reported to have disappeared within one week.
You will be thrilled with the results; most patients report that the treatment area shows fewer fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a reduction in the appearance of facial folds. Results are visible immediately. For many patients optimal results are achieved with one treatment, which can last up to 9 months. On occasion follow-up or "touch-up" injections may be needed for maintenance purposes.
Understanding Restylane®
Restylane® is a cosmetic filler used to create smooth, healthy looking skin, as well as to enhance lips, reduce the severity of nasolabial folds, chin augmentation and acne scarring, and to help create an almost flawless appearance.
This clear gel filler contains hyaluronic acid and is used to fill in the collagen that has been lost or damaged as we age. Restylane® does not use any animal products and is completely safe for all skin types. This non-surgical cosmetic alternative requires a few simple injections and no downtime.
This clear gel filler contains hyaluronic acid and is used to fill in the collagen that has been lost or damaged as we age. Restylane® does not use any animal products and is completely safe for all skin types. This non-surgical cosmetic alternative requires a few simple injections and no downtime. Restylane® is available in a variety of forms to fit the cosmetic needs of almost anyone. Our doctors at Pura Vida Medspa can advise you on the best choice of dermal filler for your individual needs. Like other dermal fillers, Restylane® is injected directly into the treatment area and provides fast and easy results that you will love.
What are the benefits and risks of Restylane®?
The benefits of Restylane® are seen immediately. You will notice smoother, younger looking skin with minimal amounts of pain and no recovery time. Most people who have received Restylane® injections have found immediate results; however, it may take two or three days for your appearance to stabilize since our natural processes require time to assimilate the additional hyaluronic acid. As you pass through this you will notice wonderful results that should last up to six months. Restylane® gives you the flexibility to contour your features exactly the way you want them. You and your doctor can create a treatment schedule that works for you.Restylane® is a safe treatment option but some minor side effects are possible. These include redness, minimal swelling, or mild discomfort, all of which are temporary and should diminish within a few days.
Understanding Radiesse®
Radiesse® is an innovative dermal filler that fills in fine lines and wrinkles and adds volume to lost or damaged collagen. Radiesse® is different because it gives the same great results as other dermal fillers but lasts much longer and helps to stimulate your own natural production of collagen. This means a natural look that you will love with fewer trips to the doctor's office, which can save you time and money.
Radiesse® is created using a water-based gel containing calcium-based micro-spheres able to co-exist with your natural skin tissue. This biocompatibility means no allergy testing and a flawless natural look that compliments your facial contours. Administered within 15 minutes, you can be on your way in no time.
Enjoy beautiful results and low risks with Radiesse®
You will notice the results immediately and they will continue for up to 12 months. This is 2 to 4 times longer than some other collagen injections. So why wait? Start enjoying a more youthful appearance today! In some cases minor swelling occurs but this should diminish with 24 hours. Radiesse® wrinkle filler stimulates your body to produce your own natural collagen, to restore fullness and smooth out the signs of aging.
ProFractional® Laser Treatment
For Deep Skin Resurfacing & Laser Wrinkle Removal

The Sciton ProFractional® Laser is a state of the art skin resurfacing system that is unique in that it can be used to treat specific areas of your skin without affecting surrounding tissue. This advanced technology allows your skin to heal in a fraction of the time because you are not treating the entire skin surface all at once but only the specific problem area.
ProFractional® laser treatments can be used to treat age and sun spots, reduce the appearance of uneven skin pigmentation, lessen the severity of wrinkles, improve stretch marks, and treat acne scarring with minimal to no downtime.
How does the ProFractional® laser treatment work?
The ProFractional® Laser treatment works by targeting specific parts of damaged tissue. The laser produces microscopic "wounds" that causes your body to begin the natural healing process. In turn, this fosters the production of collagen and new, healthy skin.
The important part of this treatment process is the design of the system that allows for targeting very specific areas and preserving the surrounding skin tissue. This lessens discomfort and healing time while promoting healthy skin free from the imperfections that age us.
What does a ProFractional® Laser treatment feel like and what should I do following treatment?
During treatment most patients report a "prickling" sensation. For patients who are sensitive to pain a topical anesthetic can be applied to ease any discomfort.
Following treatment it is extremely important to avoid direct sun exposure for approximately three months. You will be strongly advised to apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher (UVA/UVB), every two hours during sun exposure. Your newly emerged skin is very sensitive and must be treated gently during healing. Your doctor may recommend the use of an antimicrobial ointment as well to promote proper healing.
How many treatments are needed and when will I notice visible results?
Research has shown that most patients require 1-3 sessions in four-week intervals for effective treatment. This will vary depending upon the skin condition and severity of the condition being treated.

Patients receiving ProFractional® Laser treatment generally notice results immediately that progressively improve. Optimal results are usually experienced within two to three months. Remember your skin needs time to heal and replace the damaged tissue with new collagen and elastin, along with new and healthy skin cells.
Why is the ProFractional® laser treatment different from other laser treatments?
Prior to ProFractional® laser treatments, there were two types of laser treatment options available- fully ablative and non-ablative treatments. Fully ablative lasers treatments require the treatment of the entire layer of skin at very high temperatures. Although this method is very effective it also produces more side effects and long periods of healing. Although non-ablative laser treatments are safer, they required many treatments with unreliable results.
ProFractional® Laser treatments are the best of both worlds. This procedure offers the effective results of the fully ablative laser treatment with the safer, gentler benefits of the non-ablative laser treatment method. Finally you can have the results you have been searching for without the pain and time of other laser treatment methods.
Are there any risks of receiving a ProFractional® Laser treatment?
Side effects of ProFractional® Laser treatments are generally mild and fade within a day or two. They include swelling and redness. In some cases peeling may also occur.
As with most cosmetic procedures there is also a slight risk of infection or scarring related to ProFractional® Laser treatment.
Photo Rejuvenation
Photo Rejuvenation is a cosmetic treatment designed to treat the visible signs of sun damage, brown spots, rosacea, broken capillaries and age spots. Over time, our skin begins to show the signs of aging. By using this Broad Band Light (BBL) technology, Photo Rejuvenation can help to create younger looking skin. A pulsating broad beam of highly concentrated light is directed to the specific area being treated. This light selectively targets the desired area and will not cause damage to the surrounding skin. Photo Rejuvenation is the only procedure that can treat vascular redness, the appearance of rosacea, brown spots, and sun damage. How does Photo Rejuvenation Work? By using this BBL technology, Photo Rejuvenation can help to create clearer, smoother skin. A pulsating broad beam of highly concentrated light is directed to the specific area being treated. This light selectively targets the desired area and will not cause damage to the surrounding skin. BBL is safe and effective.

What is a Photo Rejuvenation treatment like?
Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. You will have to wear protective eyewear. The technician will apply a cool gel to the area being treated. During the treatment you may notice a warming sensation or a slight snapping feeling. After a treatment, the area may be pink or red; this will fade. You may resume normal activities immediately. How many treatment sessions are needed? Many patients notice a difference after a single treatment. To reap the full benefits of Photo Rejuvenation, three to four treatments may be needed. You can discuss with your technician how many treatments will be needed.
Are there any risks?
Photo Rejuvenation is a safe and effective treatment option. Any side effects are mild and temporary. These may include redness, bruising, or temporary darkening of brown spots.
Laser Hair Removal
What is laser hair removal and how does it work?

Every day we are faced with the hassle of removing unwanted hair. Well, now you can say goodbye to razors, chemicals, and waxing forever with laser hair removal. This process uses lasers to produce a beam of light that is absorbed into the skin so that that it can destroy the targeted hair follicle with the heat that it creates.
This fast and easy process quickly removes unwanted hair and is less painful than some other hair removal methods. Because you want to target the hair itself without damaging the surrounding skin, different types of lasers are used, depending upon the thickness of hair and the color of skin. Our hair grows in cycles, and can only be removed during the growth phase; so while you may have a full session, covering all target areas, you will still require a minimum of 6 treatment sessions in order to remove the unwanted hair.
What areas on the body can be treated with laser hair removal and who is an ideal candidate for laser hair removal?
Anyone who wants to be rid of the annoyance of shaving or waxing to remove unwanted hair is a candidate for laser hair removal. Legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, and the bikini line are the most common treatment areas on the body, however, other areas can be treated just ask your doctor and enjoy the benefits of smooth skin free of razor burn and stubble.
People of all skin tones and hair colors have found success with laser hair removal, however the ideal candidates for laser hair removal have lighter skin tones and dark hair (brown or black). The pigment contrast creates a better target for the light beam emitted by the laser.
How can I prepare for a laser hair removal session?
It is important to discuss your medical history, as well as, what areas you wish to have treated. You should also discuss any concerns and what benefits you hope to gain from your laser hair removal treatments.
Any patients with a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning should wait until the tan completely disappears. A tan can increase your chance of side effects (blistering or discoloration). It is important to prepare the skin by completely removing the hair with a razor the morning of or the evening before your treatment. You should avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for at least three weeks prior to treatment.
What is a laser hair removal session like?
During a treatment session you will wear protective goggles to avoid any accidental exposure of laser light to your eyes. As the laser is directed onto the target area you will feel a stinging sensation (compared by many to feel similar to a rubber-band snap). For those sensitive to pain your doctor may apply a local anesthetic. As the hair follicle is heated you may notice a strong odor of singed hair, this is a normal occurrence.
Your doctor will use a special wand to direct the laser and cooling device to keep you as comfortable as possible during your session. After your initial treatment session your doctor will create a treatment schedule so that you may receive optimal results. Remember you must treat your hair follicles during the growth phase so it will take multiple sessions.
What happens after laser hair removal?
Following a laser hair removal session there is little to no downtime, and no medications or bandages are needed. For some patients, redness and swelling are experienced for the first few hours following their treatment. Stinging can last for 24 to 48 hours and for some a slight crusting of skin can occur (if you notice this just keep the area moist with petroleum jelly-Vaseline).
Your doctor will give you post-procedure recommendations. You should avoid exercise and exertion for the initial 24 hours following your treatment because perspiration can increase irritation that may have been caused by the laser. For several weeks you should be sure to use limit sun exposure and avoid tanning booths. Ultraviolet light damages the skin. Sunscreen is essential following your treatment. Do not wax or pluck between sessions. You also need to treat the treated areas gently; do not pick, rub, or scrub. You may wash the area gently with a mild soap and tepid water.
Are there any risks or side effects to laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a safe procedure with complications occurring rarely. In a very few cases bleeding during laser treatment is possible. Although extremely unlikely, infection resulting from laser treatment is also possible.
Side effects are rare but may include temporary darkening of the skin, or hyper-pigmentation (in rare cases found to be long lasting or permanent). Lightening of the skin (hypo-pigmentation) can also occur- this is concern for patients with darker skin. Blistering, scarring, changes in skin texture, scabbing, or crusting are possible, although very rare. As new hair grows in it may be finer and lighter in color, and in some cases the new growth is in areas adjacent to the treated areas. This is easily treated with additional laser treatment sessions.

Acne Treatment
Acne therapy through technology by Sciton Lasers
Many of us have been battling acne by using the typical creams and ointments, but now there is an innovative technology that can leave your skin looking clearer and smoother in just a few short weeks.
Acne is a condition that causes inflammation of the skin in the form of clogged pores, pimples, cysts, blackheads and whiteheads. Severe acne can lead to scarring. This new BBL Pulsed Light Technology can be used to improve the appearance of acne scars as well. The BBL Pulsed Light Technology produced from the Sciton Laser dramatically improves skin condition and gives you back the clear complexion you have been striving for.
How Does the Sciton Laser Work?
The Sciton BBL Pulsed Light Treatment destroys acne by heating the sebaceous glands found in the dermis (the upper layers) of the skin, which reduces oil production, which in turn reduces the active acne. This takes place over the course of repeated treatments within 2-4 weeks. This BBL treatment is a controlled pulse given in a high-speed uniform manner with integrated contact cooling; the result of controlling the skin's surface temperature is for maximum patient comfort.
Acne scarring can also be treated by Microlaser Peel and Pro-fractional®. These skin resurfacing technique help to remove the damaged skin layers and allow new healthier skin to emerge.
How many treatments are usually needed?
Studies have shown that for many patients the results for acne reduction can be seen in 4-6 treatments. Most patients receive two treatments per week until their acne clears up. However for most patients six treatments are recommended for optimal results. These results should last about 3 months.
During your initial consultation options for treatments will be discussed to determine the best course of action for achieving your specific goals. You will also discuss your treatment schedule and what results you can expect.
What is a treatment session like? ?
When you arrive for your acne treatment you will need to put safety goggles or glasses on to protect your eyes. As your doctor begins the procedure you may notice a warming sensation on your skin, many patients describe a snapping sensation very similar to a rubber band snap. This happens as the pulsed light energy is absorbed into the specific treatment areas.
The treatment session will take between 15 and 30 minutes. The length of your procedure will depend on the size of the area being treated, the type of procedure, and how deep the pulsed light needs to penetrate.
What should I expect following a treatment session?
Most patients experience redness following an acne treatment. This will fade within a few hours. Results will vary depending on the type of condition being treated. Your doctor will provide you more detailed information about what to expect following a treatment session.
Because this type of acne therapy is gentle and non-invasive there is little to no downtime and you will be able to continue with your day without missing a step.
What after care is required following an acne treatment?
Your doctor will detail your after care requirements before beginning your treatments. You may be instructed to use certain skin care products to help minimize any inflammation or redness, as well as to shorten healing time. Your doctor will also provide instructions on how to use any products given.
It is important to remember that your skin will be sensitive to ultra-violet light so you need to avoid direct sunlight until you heal completely. It is also recommended that you use a sunscreen whenever you are in direct sun.
Medical Peel
What is a Medical Peel?
Medical peeling is a method used to enhance the appearance of skin. A medical solution is applied to the skin; this medical solution is designed to cause specific layers of skin to separate or blister, peel off, and allows new, smoother and healthier, skin to emerge.
Medical peels can treat the face, neck, or hands. They are used to treat a wide range of conditions including the reduction of fine lines around the eyes and mouth, diminish wrinkles (from sun damage, aging, or hereditary), reduce the appearance of mild scarring, treatment of acne (certain types), diminish pigmentation conditions (such as freckles, age spots, or dark patches), and an overall improvement in the look and feel of dull skin. Medical peels have also been found to be effective in the improvement of pre-cancerous keratoses, usually appearing as scaly spots. After medical peeling these spots are generally less likely to reappear.
Is a Medical Peel right for everyone?
Medical peels are found to be effective on a wide range of skin colors and types. Fair skinned patients with light hair are generally considered the ideal candidates for this treatment option, however darker skin types have also found good results.
The type of condition being treated will determine the type of results you will experience. During your initial consultation, your doctor will discuss with you what your likely outcome will be.
How is a Medical Peel performed?
A medical peel is administered in a doctor's office as an outpatient. There is no real recovery time needed.
When you arrive for your appointment your skin will be cleansed thoroughly with a special solution to remove excess oils. Your eyes and hair will be covered prior to beginning the peeling process, this is so that they will be protected. Your doctor will then apply 1 or more medical solutions to small, targeted, areas on the skin. These solutions include glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol). The process is done in a very specific manner so that the wounds are controlled, and new smoother, more rejuvenated skin can emerge.
What do I need to do before a Medical Peel?
Before having a Medical Peel your doctor may ask you to discontinue the use of certain medications. You may also need to prepare your skin for the peel with a topical preconditioning medication. These medications include Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid.
Your doctor may also prescribe oral antibiotics or oral antiviral medicine before your medical peel. It is important to begin taking those as prescribed, especially for deeper medical peels to prevent infection.
What should I expect during a Medical Peel?
Most patients report feeling a warm or hot sensation that lasts approximately 5 to 10 minutes during the medical peeling process. After this initial heating period, a stinging sensation is felt. Your doctor may apply a cool compress to relieve this stinging.
For patients who are undergoing a deeper medical peel, your doctor may recommend pain medication during or after the procedure. This is something you should discuss with your doctor prior to having your medical peel treatment.
What will happen after the Medical peel is completed?
The type of reaction you experience after a medical peel will depend largely on the type of peel you receive. Patients report experiencing a reaction similar to that of a sunburn following a mild medical peel; redness, followed by a scaling of the skin occurs, which generally ends in about 3-7 days. Patients receiving mild peels can have them repeated in 1-4 week intervals until the optimal effect is achieved. Patients receiving medium or deep peels may experience swelling and water blisters. These blisters may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off. Patients can receive medium-depth peels 6-12 months apart (if needed).
As your new skin emerges it is very delicate and can be subject to complications, so it is very important to avoid over-exposure to the sun and to wear sunscreen when exposed. Your doctor will recommend any follow-up care needed.
Are there any risks associated with Medical Peels?
The risks involved are low but do include the development of temporary or permanent color change in certain skin types. There is also a low risk of scarring for individuals who scar easily (in the unlikely event that this does occur it can be treated very effectively). There is also a slight risk of the reactivation of cold sores for patients with a history of herpes outbreaks.
It is important to inform your doctor of your medical history, including a history of keloids (scar tissue overgrowth), prior to having a medical peel. Your doctor can better inform you of the risks and treatments available.
Microdermabrasion
What is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that removes the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveals younger, healthier-looking skin.
What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion?
There are amazing benefits of Microdermabrasion that can be seen immediately. Your skin will look and feel renewed and radiant. A minimum of 6 treatments are necessary to achieve optimal results.
What is a Microdermabrasion treatment session like?
When you arrive for your treatment your technician will thoroughly cleanse your face. Using a hand-piece connected to the Microdermabrasion machine, your technician will then apply a sterile diamond surfaced aesthetic tip to your skin. By employing the appropriate level of pressure to your skin the treatment will gently exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin cells.
What side effects are there to Microdermabrasion?
There are very few side effects caused by Microdermabrasion, since it is a non-invasive procedure. For some patients redness or dryness appear after a treatment session. This is a temporary condition. Your technician may review the products you are currently using and prescribe a custom regime for your skin.
